These competitive grants can fund 33% of eligible capital costs, up to $2 million, for acquisition, construction, and/or major renovation of capital facilities. This grant opportunity is available to all tribes and nonprofit organizations with emphasis on performing arts projects, art museum projects, and cultural organization projects.
Funding Information
The maximum grant award for the 2025-2027 biennium is $2,000,000. There is no minimum grant award amount.
Eligible Projects
- A proposed project must involve the construction, renovation, or acquisition of facilities that focus on the active interpretation, performance, or exhibition of aesthetic traditions, practices, or works of art that characterize cultural values.
- Acquisition of bare land must be accompanied by the construction or renovation of a usable facility to be considered an eligible project.
- Organizations cannot apply for multiple Capital Programs competitive grants for the same project scope of work.
- The state Historical Society awards construction grants to some organizations that may also be eligible for BFA funding. You may not submit an application to each program. However, you may reapply to BFA two years from now for a different project. Applicants and/or foundations or entities acting on behalf of the same project will not be able to apply for both.
Eligible Applicants
All applicants must meet the following eligibility standards at the time the application is submitted:
- Be a Tribe or registered in the state of Washington as a nonprofit organization;
- Have a legally constituted board of directors;
- Be dedicated to an arts-related activity;
- Agree to enter the LEED certification process or receive an exemption from Commerce;
- Agree to pay state prevailing wages as of the date the budget becomes effective;
- Have control of the project site via ownership or executed long-term lease (15 years) at the time of application — operating agreements will not be accepted as site control. All lease agreements must be recorded with the county of record; and
- Have made progress in an active capital fundraising campaign dedicated to the project.
