These state funds are available primarily for the purpose of providing low-income and at-risk children with scholarships for swimming lessons based on nationally recognized water safety curricula. Up to 15% of the grant funds may be used to hire water safety instructors or lifeguards or to train water safety instructors or lifeguards in nationally recognized water safety practices and instruction.
The primary outcome for this grant opportunity is to increase access to water safety instruction, especially among low-income and at-risk children ages 4-18. Additional outcomes may include increasing the number of water safety instructors or lifeguards available in the geographic area; and/or increasing training opportunities for individuals to receive instruction to become water safety instructors or lifeguards in nationally recognized water safety programs in the geographic area.

Funding Information
- A total of $250,000 is available under Minnesota Session Laws 2023, article 4, section 2, subdivision 5(b) for this competition.
- Grant award amounts will vary depending on the capacity and potential reach. The minimum award is $10,000 and the maximum award is $24,000.
Grant Period
The term of the grant period is anticipated to be January 2024 through June 30, 2025.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligible applicants are organizations that serve low-income and at-risk children ages 4-18. For the purposes of this competition, this means that the organizations provides services to children living in a community served by a Local Education Agency (LEA) for which not less than 20 percent of the children served by the LEA qualifies for free and reduced-price lunch (FRE).
