Eligibility Criteria
All program partners must:
- Be categorized into a minimum of one Impact Area (health, education, financial stability) that best aligns with the funding request.
- Document nonprofit status and reflect services that meet a recognized need.
- Be tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organizations.
- Operate on a sound financial basis in accordance with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and maintain adequate accounting and reporting systems; An organization must provide a financial review performed by an independent Certified Public Accountant (CPA). An organization with gross annual revenue of at least $1 million in the previous year will be required to provide a financial audit performed by an independent CPA in lieu of a financial review.
- Serve Montgomery, Floyd, City of Radford, Pulaski, and/or Giles.
- Be anti-terrorism compliant with the USA Patriot Act and other counter-terrorism laws.
- Complete a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) prior to receiving a grant award.
Funding Exclusions
United Way of Southwest Virginia does not make grants to:
- Individuals.
- Fraternal Organizations, unless in support of a specific program open to or benefiting the entire community without regard to membership status.
- Fundraising events such as walk-a-thons, tournaments, fashion shows, auctions, or dinners.
- Endowment funds.
- Scholarships, Fellowships, and Travel grants.
- Pay off past debts or existing obligations.
- Organizations and programs that are designed to elect candidates to public office.
- Organizations with religious or membership affiliations unless the program is open to the entire community without regard to religious beliefs or membership status.
