The MDARD Agriculture Development Bureau offers a grant opportunity designed to build capacity and readiness for minority-owned food and agriculture businesses across Michigan.
The applicants can request grant funds designed to support collaborative planning and capacity building initiatives that advance efforts to address local needs including, but not limited to, capacity building, development readiness, partnerships, and planning.
Funding Information
Funding will primarily support the following types of projects:
- Capacity Building: This category encompasses initiatives focused on enhancing or establishing fellowship programs, community-based internship programs, training curriculum development, and leadership programs. Projects should demonstrate an innovative and collaborative approach aimed at building long-term capacity for minority business owners.
- Development Readiness: Projects falling under this category aim to prepare minority-owned business owners to establish essential prerequisites for development or investment. Activities may include business plan development, project development studies, grant writing, grant management, financial management training, and similar endeavors.
- Partnerships and Planning: Activities within this category involve the development of plans and implementation strategies geared towards building readiness for future projects. This may include collaborative initiatives, strategic development, and investment plans aimed at improving the chances of successfully applying for grant funding.
Grant Period
Grantees will be eligible for reimbursement up to two (2) times, at specified dates, during the 12‐month grant cycle, with the final reimbursement provided at the completion of the project.

- Tax‐exempt organizations/nonprofits, including community foundations and statewide associations.
- Economic Development or Foundations (SBDC, Michigan Works, etc.)
- Federally Recognized Tribes
- Educational institutions (i.e., universities, community colleges, school districts, etc.)
