This fund, a partnership between the City of Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Foundation, and the McKnight Foundation, offers grants for place-based, community-driven initiatives and projects that contribute to a reduction in local greenhouse gas emissions and increase the livability and resilience of local communities. Proposals should align with the goals of the Minneapolis Climate Equity Plan and the Minneapolis Strategic Racial Equity Plan.
Projects should further one or more of the goals of the Minneapolis Climate Equity Plan related to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the priorities of Minneapolis Green Zones.
Green House Emissions
- Energy Efficiency: Significantly improve the energy efficiency of the commercial, residential, and public buildings.
- Renewable Energy: Increase the use of local, renewable energy.
- Reduction in Vehicle Miles Traveled: Reduce vehicle miles traveled in Minneapolis.
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Shrink the waste stream by reducing waste, encouraging reuse, and increasing recycling of both organic and inorganic materials.
Green Zone Priorities
- Air, Water, Land: Clean up soil and water contamination. Improve air quality, livability, and environmental quality in business and transport. Decrease transportation and related pollution to improve neighborhood health and safety. Reduce cumulative pollution and health impacts.
- Green Workforce: Increase investments in green jobs and career opportunities.
- Energy, Housing, and Anti-Displacement: Increase high-quality and affordable environmental housing.
- Residents and Small Business: Reduce the costs of electric and heating utilities.
- Healthy Food Access: Invest in and increase access to affordable and healthy foods by supporting local food growers, production, and distribution.
- Environmental Education: Support community organizing and advance environmental education in communities and schools.
- Emergency Preparedness: Support community organizations that increase the emergency preparedness of households and community space for extreme heat, cold, and weather events.
