The Youth Council will distribute $110,000 in competitive grants to nonprofits delivering programs and services in Washtenaw County. Eligible organizations are those whose work addresses funding priorities determined through a Needs Assessment (completed every 3-4 years).
In addition, the Youth Council oversees the distribution of dollars from two permanently endowed funds:
- The Children /Disabilities Fund – programs/projects which exist to meet the special needs of children ages 5-18 living with disabilities in Washtenaw County
- The James & Clarice Foster Fund – programs/projects which are oriented to support the work of the Juvenile Division of the Probate Court (ages 5-18)
For 2024 the Youth Council has analyzed the Needs Assessment, and decided to strategically focus their efforts on one issue area to maximize impact:
- Mental Health & Wellness – programs/projects that address depression, anxiety, suicide, self-harm, body image, academic stress, and overall mental well-being for high school age youth (ages 13-18)
The Youth Council will prioritize funding organizations which are doing work to address the issues in bold above AND which demonstrate a commitment to the following:
- providing stipends for participants and/or leadership positions
- offering free or reduced cost/sliding scale participation
- assisting with transportation to and from programming
- honoring youth voice and perspective
