Details:
In 1992, H. Dunlop “Buz” Dawbarn established a fund at the Community Foundation to improve education in his local community by providing cash awards to individuals who have most successfully inspired young people to set educational goals, encouraged them to reach their full potential, and fostered a lifelong appreciation of learning, in the public school systems of Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County. The Dawbarn Education Awards Committee selects those nominees who go above and beyond their formal job responsibilities to make a real and lasting impact on the life of a student.
Dawbarn Education Award recipients have included many teachers, but also guidance counselors, coaches, administrators, staff, custodians, volunteers, bus drivers, mentors, parents, and community leaders. Each recipient has made a real and lasting difference in the life of a student. They each achieve that objective in different ways. Their Award recipients don’t simply do their jobs very well, they go beyond what is expected of them. They enable students to see and reach their personal potential. They help them overcome personal obstacles. They inspire students to practice integrity and personal responsibility. They inspire others to do the same. And they do this not for honors or accolades, but to see each child have a real chance to succeed. Their extra effort, whether to help a struggling child gain the confidence to take one positive step at a time or to challenge a student to achieve far more than they could have ever imagined, affects their future for generations to come.
