The program, which is supported by the NC Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, will award a minimum of 40 grants to independent family farms. This is a great opportunity for any producer who is thinking of diversifying, improving, or expanding their operation.
Two Grant Options
- Farmer Grants
- Grants to independent small family NC farms.
- Community Grants
- Grants for local community organizations that work with family farms Community Grants NC State Extension, farming associations, farmer co-ops, farmers market.
- A Livestock Association could purchase portable corral equipment for members to share/rent.
- The local farmers market could get a grant to expand or update the facility.
- An Extension Agent might apply for funding to set up a food coop that will benefit all the farms in their community.
Priority will be given to
Applicants that are current/former tobacco growers, former quota holders, tobacco workers or close family descendants. Farms that have not received previous funding from NC Tobacco Trust Commission, RAFI or NC AgVentures will be given a higher priority. Applicants that earn at least 50% of their gross personal income from their farm operation. Proposals that present a new direction or innovative opportunity to diversify, expand or implement new entrepreneurial plans for their farm operations that are viable and will increase farm profits.

Independent Family Farmers or local community organizations that work directly with farmers from the following counties are eligible to apply:
