A primary aim of the program is to provide holistic support rather than restrict resources to the creative work that artists produce. The primary goal of the program is to bolster a creative workforce that composes a significant portion of Maryland’s creative and economic activity.

Use of Funds
Grants for Artists funds may be used for:
- Administrative costs, consultant fees, contractual services, daycare services, entry fees, equipment rental, exhibition costs, financial tools or planning, food, housing, insurance, studio or workspace costs, materials and supplies, marketing costs, medical costs, payment to technical crews, fabricators, or collaborators, professional memberships, performance costs, production costs, student loans, submission fees for grant or residency applications, travel and transportation, utilities, website development, and other costs associated with independent artists’ working and living expenses
- Any applicant with questions about eligible uses of funds is encouraged to reach out to relevant MSAC staff, as listed above
Eligibility Criteria
- Independent Artist
- Must be an artist not directly affiliated with a larger arts organization or program.
- Must produce or present projects or programs that are relevant to the community and accessible to the public.
- Must be Maryland residents (owning or renting residential property in Maryland six months prior to the application’s submission and throughout the funded project or program) and must be 18 years of age or older.
- May not be enrolled in any matriculated high school, undergraduate or graduate degree program.
- Must have met all reporting and obligations for MSAC grants previously received.
- Must not have been awarded Grant for Artists funding in the prior fiscal year (FY23: July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023).
- Collaborative Groups
- Collaborative groups are not eligible for support through the Grants for Artists program, though multiple members of collaborative groups may apply individually, provided they meet eligibility requirements.
- Arts Organizations or Arts Programs
- Entities (e.g., non-profit organizations, LLCs, institutions, government agencies, etc.) are not eligible for support through the Grants for Artists program.
