All subjects and themes relevant to the communities served are welcome. These grants aim to:
- Connect audiences more deeply to the communities where they live and work
- Solidify community partnerships and diversify audiences
- Creatively employ the tools of the humanities to respond to issues and ideas capturing the imagination and passion of New Yorkers today.
Priorities
HNY prioritizes support to projects that reach audiences with fewer opportunities to attend educational and cultural programming. Because they are a statewide organization, within each grant round they strive to make awards in as many regions of the state as possible. All subjects and themes relevant to the communities served are welcome. Special priority is given to proposals that address environmental-humanities topics; impacts of incarceration and the “prison ecosystem”; and the Semiquincentennial of the founding of the United States. Other priorities include supporting small organizations (with operating budgets of less than $250,000) and rural organizations.
Humanities New York (HNY) supports projects that activate, frame, or deepen the understanding of what it means to be human. They encourage and support innovative approaches in the design and delivery of public-facing programming.
- Through the grants program, they strive to ensure that all New Yorkers may access the tools and experiences of the humanities.
- Competitive projects are engaging to a variety of New Yorkers and do not require specialized knowledge to participate in or enjoy. They welcome projects that serve targeted communities—such as families, youth, seniors, veterans, prison populations, and individuals with special needs.
- Because they encourage organizations to develop projects that respond to community needs and interests, they are open to a variety of project formats.
