Each trust has restrictions that the Trust office must follow. The spring round of the Small Community Grants Trust program offers grants in five categories that reflect these restrictions:
- charitable and humane purposes
- special or new recreation
- recreational areas for children
- field trips for children, and
- to adorn and embellish Boston’s streets and public spaces.

Eligibility Criteria
- Organization must be a 501c3 or non-profit with a fiscal sponsor or partnered with a City of Boston department. Small Community Grants cannot be awarded to individuals.
- Organization must be at least one year old (existed prior to March 18, 2023.)
- Organization must have two separate contact people, with separate email addresses and phone numbers.
- Population served: must serve Bostonians, and any grant funds awarded must exclusively serve Bostonians.
