Newark Arts provides the ArtStart mini grants to community members, schools, non-profits and individual artists with the aim of nurturing a broad spectrum of arts and cultural activities in the neighborhoods. The program aims to provide seed money for new, innovative, community-led art initiatives.
Priorities
Newark Arts will give paramount consideration to projects that:
- Enhance recognition of the value of the arts as a catalyst to address social issues
- Engage with neighborhood or community based organizations and are developed to address their identified needs
- Take place in local neighborhoods, stimulating creativity and community engagement
- Engage children, youth and/or seniors and people with special needs
- Support academic achievement
- Are provided by small organizations and individual artists, enhancing their future capacity
Applications may include various artistic disciplines including
Funding Information
- Applicants may request a maximum of $3,000.
- ArtStart events must take place between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025.
Grants Funds Can be used
- Artist fees, coordinators, technical crew, and other professional fees
- Space rental, props, transportation costs, and other material fees integral to the project or related to making it accessible to people with disabilities (e.g. sign language interpreter; audio-captioning)
- Operating expenses such as printing, photocopying, supplies, and materials
- Promotional expenses related to the project.

- Show collaboration with community-based organizations in local neighborhoods
- Address civic & social needs and empower residents
- Stimulate creativity and community engagement
- Engage diverse populations such as children, youth, seniors and people with special needs
- Are led by small-budget organizations and individual artists
- Occur in neighborhoods beyond downtown Newark
Eligibility Criteria
- ArtStart Grants provide support for local arts and cultural organizations, schools, and individual artists.
- Individuals and organizations may apply for projects in various disciplines, including the creative visual, literary, performing, film, and public arts.
- Organizations without 501(c)3 status must apply with a tax-exempt organization serving as their fiscal agent. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is required as evidence of this relationship.
