Friends of Hawaii Charities, Inc. (Friends), a 501 (c) 3, was incorporated in 1998 as a result of the shared vision and collaboration of a small group of Hawaii business and community leaders to address a significant need for funding among Hawaii’s not-for-profit organizations. Friends benefits not-for-profit organizations by providing grants that fund programs for children, youth, women, elderly and the needy. The Friends’ principal fund-raising event is the Sony Open in Hawaii PGA TOUR golf tournament held at Waialae Country Club each January. Friends and charity partner, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation have generated nearly $22 Million benefiting numerous Hawaii not-for-profit organizations.
What type of grants do Friends of Hawaii Charities fund?
To be considered for funding, an organization must be a public agency or a not-for-profit organization certified under the Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code. Friends funds programs that benefit Hawaii’s children, youth, women, elderly, and the impoverished in the following areas:
- Arts and education
- Healthcare and basic needs
- Social services
Funding Considerations and Eligibility
Friends will fund programs that will make a significant impact in our communities. The funding should support direct program needs and not overhead costs and endowment funds. To be considered for funding, an organization must be a public agency or a not-for-profit organization certified under the Section 501 (c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Further, Friends funds programs that benefit Hawaii’s children, youth, women, elderly and needy in the following areas:
- Culture, arts, and educational programs
- Healthcare and basic needs
- Social services (for example family abuse, drug and job rehabilitation, elderly services, and services for terminally ill)
Other Funding Consideration
Friends recognizes the importance of not-for-profit organizations having audited financial statements in order to qualify for grant funding from large foundations. Friends will consider providing funding support to help not-for-profit organizations who have not had their books audited in the past due to budgetary constraints. To be considered for audit support funds, please note this in the appropriate section of the online grant application summary.
In evaluating the applications, the Distribution Committee will consider the following:
- Is the not-for-profit organization focused and best able to provide an unfilled need for Hawaii’s children, youth, women, elderly and needy?
- Does the program have clearly defined goals, action plans, and measurable outcomes?
- Will the program significantly deliver on its services?
- Will the grant award be used efficiently? How little of the financial support will be used for overhead costs, and how much will be used for direct program needs?
Some things that are generally considered outside of Friends grants guidelines are:
- Endowment campaigns
- Salaries for staff and professionals
- General overhead and operating costs such as rent, travel expenses, equipment maintenance, and administrative expenses
