Schaumburg’s C GAP (Comprehensive Green Action Plan) established goals for the village to advance sustainability throughout the community. One of the goals of the Education and Outreach component of C GAP is to “Create a recognition program to support and promote the green actions taken by businesses and residents.”
Schaumburg’s Environmental Committee established the Green Recognition Program in 2010 and presents the Al Larson Environmental Award annually.

Eligibility Criteria
- To be eligible for the award, the property must be in compliance with village ordinances and codes. There are no restrictions on the age of the building; however, projects that are nominated cannot be older than three (3) years. As an example, eligible projects for the 2021 Award cannot have been constructed any earlier than 2018.
- Applications are accepted for residential and non-residential properties located in Schaumburg, and may be submitted by property owners, business owners, and by others who feel a project or site deserves recognition. For multifamily developments, applications should include whole buildings or sites; not individual units within a building.
- Community Development staff will present all applications to the Environmental Committee for their consideration. The Environmental Committee will then refer the recommended awardees to the Health and Human Services Committee for final approval by the Village Board. Residential and non-residential nominees will be selected on an annual basis.
- Applications will be kept on file for future consideration for a period of no more than two years from the date of submittal. Applications for continuous improvement will be considered only for a period of two years from the initial award.
