Every summer since 2016, the City of Springfield’s Stormwater Team has commissioned artists to paint murals at select City storm drains. This project, called UpStream Art, supports artists and beautifies the city while increasing awareness of the connection between City streets and local waterways.
UpStream Art is a mural painting project hosted by the City of Springfield’s Stormwater Team to promote healthy waterways and support local artists. Their current UpStream Art collection consists of 33 eye-catching murals located around storm drains in Springfield.
The goal of the UpStream Art is to inspire community members to do their part in preventing pollutants from entering storm drains.
- They value Springfield’s waterways.
- They’re a vital yet easily overlooked part of their City that they rely on for relaxation, recreation, and resources. The biggest threat to their waterways is pollution from urban runoff, which is why they discuss storm drains and behaviors that pollute stormwater.
- They support the arts and artists.
- Artists create and spread important ideas, meaning, and culture. They proudly support them and pay every artist who installs an UpStream Art mural.
