This essay contest is organized by African American Community Fund, Community Foundation of Lorain County, Lorain Historical Society, Lorain Public Library System, Lorain County Alliance of Black School Educators, Lorain County Urban League, Lorain County Section of National Council of Negro Women, Oberlin College.
2022 Theme: Environment
If you have ever read a Toni Morrison novel, chances are you remember some of the characters, their challenges, and the ENVIRONMENT that surrounded them.
- Elementary school (K-5): How has your environment made you who you are?
- Middle school (6-8), High school (9-12), and College: Reflect on how your physical and virtual environment has shaped your identity.
Funding information
The winning students will receive $75 and one of Ms. Morrison’s books.
Guidelines
- Essays may be submitted by students Kindergarten through College in one of the following categories:
- Elementary school (K-5)
- Middle school (6-8)
- High school (9-12)
- College
- The essay must be 700 words or less excluding the essay title and cover page. The essay may be typed or printed. Pictures in the elementary categories are acceptable.
- Entries may be submitted online, by postal mail, or dropped off.
- Entries submitted must include a cover page indicating:
- your name
- category
- address
- e-mail (student or guardian)
- phone number
- school name
- The essay must be original and unpublished. Plagiarized entries will be rejected.
