Currently, their focus is on projects located in California, specifically the geographic areas of Northern California, the Central Valley, and the Sierra Nevada, including the entire California-Oregon Klamath River watershed and the watersheds that arise in the Sierras and terminate in Nevada’s terminal lakes. Their definition of Northern California extends from the Oregon border south to and ending at the northern boundaries of the San Luis Obispo, Ventura, Los Angeles and San Bernardino county lines.
They award grants for environmental stewardship and conservation efforts. They seek projects with emphases on grassroots action, environmental education, capacity building, citizen participation, collaborative efforts, innovative programs, planning and training, and community-level climate change programs.
They do not fund conferences, expeditions, exhibitions, film festivals, lobbying or influencing legislation, political campaigns, debt retirement, mortgage reduction, emergency grants, endowments, fellowships, professorships, scholarships, program-related investment, or land acquisition, buildings and capital improvements. They do not make multi-year grants or pass-through grants.

Eligibility Criteria
The Foundation can fund only 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organizations. A grant recipient may be a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization or, lacking tax exempt status, may be a non-profit organization that has a tax-exempt fiscal agent.
