The foundation will fund projects that focus on replicable models or shareable tools accomplishing one or more of the following goals:
- Increasing trust for and accessibility to quality news sources;
- Supporting new journalism ecosystems, including both professional and student publications;
- Combating bad-faith disinformation that undermines democratic institutions and processes.
Along with free and fair elections, access to shared, credible information is critical to a democratic society’s ability to evaluate politicians and politics and hold public leaders accountable. Historically in the United States, newspapers and local television news programs have played an enormous role in building a well-informed citizenship with the interest and capacity to hold politicians accountable for their actions. Over the last two decades, the decline of such traditional local outlets, coupled with the rising power of social media platforms, has left our media landscape highly polarized, with partisan identity shaping what information one sees. Especially in digital spaces, false information now often overwhelms true information
