The Lillian L. Colby Charitable Foundation strives to impact the greater Chattanooga region by advancing education and economic mobility, with special emphasis on the marginalized. The Colby Foundation will accomplish this work through collaborative, proactive grantmaking.

The Colby Foundation places priority on innovative programs, projects and organizations that have a meaningful impact on the unmet needs of underserved children, adults and families in the greater Chattanooga area. They encourage programs that are addressing the root causes of poor outcomes in the Foundation’s interest areas:
- Education
- Programs that break the cycle of poverty
- Early childhood through post-secondary
- Mentoring
- Exclusion: no support for individuals
- Healthcare
- Community-based
- Preventive
- Health equity
- Community Needs
- Homelessness
- Hunger and food insecurity
- Other acute needs.
Types of Support
The Colby Foundation provides operating and program/project support. Generally, the Foundation will not make grants to support capital projects and campaigns; nor will the Foundation make grants to individuals.

The average grant size based on the history of the Foundation’s grantmaking is $5,000 to $25,000.
Eligibility Criteria
The Directors will consider qualified applications received from organizations that are exempt from taxation under the Internal Revenue Code Section 501 (c)(3). If you are a 509 (a)(3) Supporting Organization, please be prepared to provide additional information. Grants are not made to support individuals.
