The James & Virginia Benson Memorial Fund assists organizations in Placer County with a focus on providing assistance and services to seniors.
This grant will accept proposals for programs/projects that:
- specifically serve the Placer County community;
- are from organizations that are well-equipped to carry out the projects effectively and the
- projects are in line with the mission of the organizations; and
include clear and measurable project objectives and activities

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for consideration, organizations must be invited to apply.
- Criteria for organizations invited to apply were:
- Be considered a 501(c)(3) public charity, 501(c)(3) private operating foundation or be fiscally-sponsored by an organization that meets this requirement.
- Provide effective programs for seniors
- Primarily serve Seniors in Placer County
Grants may not be used for capital campaigns, gifts to endowments, deficit funding, fundraising events, or direct assistance to individuals. Additionally, grants may not be used for political advocacy, legislative policy efforts, or to promote particular religious and/or spiritual beliefs. Grants will not be given to organizations that discriminate on the basis of age, race, gender, national origin, ethnicity, language, veteran status, sexual orientation, or disability.
Selection Criteria
Proposals will be reviewed based on the following criteria:
Need Identification (10%)
- The need identified within the grant application:
- Lies within the Foundation’s service area: Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, and/or El Dorado counties
- Represents a well-demonstrated need in the community, supported by objective data sources
Proposal Request/Program Description (50%)
- The proposal as outlined in the grant application:
- Reflects a clear purpose and meets the mission of your organization
- Incorporates clear and measurable project objectives that directly address the stated need
- Possesses a sound, practical, and effective program strategy with built-in evaluative measures for continuous quality improvement
Fiscal Management (40%)
- The grant applicant demonstrates sound fiscal practices by providing:
- A detailed budget that reflects the project in a realistic and fiscally judicious manner
- Evidence that the organization is actively seeking other sources of funding for a diversified revenue stream and for program sustainability
- Demonstration of past fiscal responsibility with no significant budget deficits or cash-flow issues
