The Reaching for Excellence (RFE) in Texas School Health Grant will fund projects that are in the planning stage or operating for less than one school year. The project must focus on one or more of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model components.
Research on Health and Academics shows that there is a strong association between the overall health and well-being of students and their academic performance. Students’ health also affects their behavior, cognitive skills, and attitudes. The projects should engage students, their families, and the community.
Funding Information
- Two grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded.
- Funds will be released in the form of reimbursements to award recipients.
- Project Timeline: September 1, 2023 – August 31, 2024.
Eligibility Criteria
Applications will be considered for grant funding project only if all the following requirements are met:
- The program or initiative described in the application is in the planning stage and not yet started or has been operating less than a complete school year and has no final results.
- The program or initiative identified must strive to improve the physical, mental and/or social well-being of students, staff, and/or the greater school community (parents/family members, PTA, community members).
- The program or initiative identified must need to focus on one or more of the components in the Whole School, Whole Community, and Whole Child (WSCC) model.
- Evidence of the district’s school health advisory council’s (SHAC) support of the new program or initiative in the form of a letter of support.
Additional Grant Requirements
- Projects must align with their school district’s local wellness policy.
- Provide DSHS with a designated contact person for the duration of the grant.
- Comply with receipt retention, deliverable submission, and reporting requirements.
- Attend monthly meeting with DSHS staff during the duration of the grant.
- Grant funds may not be used for promotional items including but not limited to hats, bags, keychains, bottles, and fliers
