The Community Foundation’s Board of Directors created the Community Resiliency and Preparedness Fund to create a more prepared and resilient community before disaster strikes. The Community Foundation also acknowledges the League of California Community Foundations for its generous grant in support of this fund.
The goal of the Fund is to support disaster preparedness projects that make concrete steps to mitigate disaster hazards, such as fire-safe building and landscaping; projects that encourage communities to improve resiliency, i.e. emotionally, physically, and socially; and service continuity projects which support community centers, senior centers, health centers, and family resource centers with a priority for evacuation centers, or those who provide a critical gap in the local safety net services.
Funding Priorities
Funding priorities include but are not limited to:
- Disaster Preparedness Projects
- Workshops on fire-safe construction and landscaping for homeowners throughout the region.
- Organizational collaboration to work with homeowners, city and county organizations to assess and prevent wildfire threat.
- Funding for local emergency response organizations to be fully equipped and better prepared to respond in case of a disaster.
- Community Resiliency Projects
- Activities that offer long-term benefit in supporting emotional, physical, or social recovery.
- Supporting a Municipal Advisory Council (or other local governing bodies) to develop a long-term plan for a community.
- Establishing or further developing local or regional disaster response/preparedness teams.
- Assisting with a community resilience assessment to specifically evaluate the physical, economic, and social implications of community decisions (either active or passive) made with respect to recovery needs following a disaster.
- Service Continuity Projects
- Disaster planning and communications improvements.
- Purchasing disaster readiness supplies, equipment and/or software to ensure business continuity in the face of disaster.
- Generator installation and/or other critical infrastructure improvements.

- Total Funding Available: $80,000;
- Grant range $1,000-$7,500.
Eligibility Criteria
All applicant organizations must:
- Serve residents of Mendocino County or applicants not headquartered in Mendocino County must ensure that all grant dollars requested are spent within the County.
- Be legally chartered in California and in possession of a determination letter from the IRS declaring the organization a public charity that is exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3); or be a school district, tribe, or special district (e.g., community services, recreation, fire protection); or have an aligned mission with a fiscal sponsor.
- Have one year of operational history after receiving charitable status.
- Conduct business without discrimination on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, national origin, or religious affiliation.
- Eligible project expenses may include indirect or administration costs.
