They are excited to support projects with rich content, participation from humanities content experts and collaborators from the arts, and robust support from partners in the community.
Priorities
Intended to support Maine non-profit organizations to provide rich arts and humanities projects with broad public outreach that supports and involves their communities.
- Organizations serving and/or led by members of communities traditionally under-resourced in the humanities are encouraged to apply.
- These groups include people of color, people who identify as LGBTQ+, people who live in rural areas, people with disabilities, people who identify as immigrants or refugees, and people whose first (or only) language is not English.
- It is the aim of the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Arts Commission to maximize the impact of available funding
Funding Information
The program offers grants of up to $1000 to Maine non-profit organizations for public programs containing both arts and humanities components.
Project Criteria
Proposals will be evaluated on their strength and clarity in the following areas:
- The project has well-developed, Maine based Arts and Humanities content, including:
- A strong connection to Maine.

Guidance from humanities content experts and collaborators from the arts.

The project has a public-facing component.
- A well-thought-out project plan and timeline.

The project has a broad impact and involves the community’s input.

The project budget includes a 1:1 match (in-kind and/or cash).
Eligibility Criteria
- 501(c)(3) organizations registered in Maine. Organizations without 501(c)(3) status are able to apply through a fiscal sponsor.
- Maine tribal organizations.
- Maine public libraries.
- Government agencies; universities, colleges, academic departments; public, private, or parochial schools; churches.
- The applicant is in good standing with MHC and MAC (no overdue reports).
- Not eligible: individuals; for-profit organizations; political or advocacy organizations.
