Action Awards are intended to support the small but mighty efforts that will help people reconnect to the city and each other outdoors through free, recurring programming – think exercise classes, storytime series, monthly neighborhood gatherings like movie nights, or projects focused on caring for our public spaces, like gardening or cleanup days.
Shine On SF is piloting a new program to support projects that build community in streets and public spaces.
The Shine On SF Action Awards program exists to support small-scale, community-led activation projects in public spaces citywide. The program aims to create momentum towards recovery with high-impact projects that are easy for new or existing community groups or even businesses to implement on a recurring basis. Projects should be place-based and should help build community and re-connect people to places they love in San Francisco.
The program’s primary aim is to support free, recurring programs that bring people together and build community in streets and public spaces. Examples might include movie nights, outdoor book groups, knitting circles, musical activities, fitness classes or projects focused on caring for public spaces, like gardening or cleanup days. They encourage creative ideas so long as free, recurring community programming that is anchored in a public space you care about is at the heart of your proposal. The place-based aspect is important – the program aims to build community at a hyper-local level. The application will specifically ask what your relationship to the public space is and who your expected audience is. They are more likely to fund projects that engage and connect people with a stake in the public space you’re focusing on.
