The Phoenix Award artist selection was paused during the pandemic, but they are back and better than ever! They are grateful to be able to offer the Phoenix Awards again this year after a deeply trying time for all of us. They are anticipating a truly special year for all involved.
Since the inception of the Phoenix Awards, more than 100 local artists, sculptors, photographers, dancers, musicians, vocalists, educators, writers and literary supporters, administrators, and volunteers have been recognized by their peers and fellow Lawrencians.
There are 10 categories for five awards
Arts Advocate, Arts Administrator, Arts Education, Design Arts, Literary Arts, Musical Arts, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Volunteer in the Arts, and the Phoenix Award for Exceptional Artistic Achievement. There is also a “Creative Spaces” Award category which recognizes outstanding achievement in imaginative and environmentally forward-thinking place-making.
The all-inclusive Phoenix Award art project budget is $3,000 and the selected artist will be required to create six awards—one for each awardee and one for display at the Lawrence Arts Center.
Criteria
- The opportunity to compete for this project is open to all professional artists residing in Lawrence or Douglas County.
- The City of Lawrence does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, religion, age, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability. Qualifications by City employees or their relatives, and members of the Artist Selection Panel or Cultural Art Commission or their relatives will not be considered. Experience with public art projects, especially in relation to capital projects, is preferred. Applicants must be able to work effectively within the project timeline and collaborate with the design team and multiple government agencies.
