Purpose
The purpose of the DRRPs is to achieve the goals of, and improve the effectiveness of, services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act, by generating new knowledge, or developing methods, procedures, and rehabilitation technologies that advance a wide range of health and function, community living, and employment outcomes among people with disabilities, especially people with disabilities who have the greatest support needs. Under this particular DRRP priority, the grantee must conduct research on the international variation in rehabilitation intensity and length of stay following spinal cord injury (SCI), and the relationship between this variation and rehabilitation outcomes. The U.S. based grantee must have international collaborators, and must explore the experiences and outcomes of people with SCI in the U.S. and other countries.
Priorities
The Administrator of the Administration for Community Living establishes a priority for a Disability and Rehabilitation Research Project (DRRP) to conduct an international exploration of rehabilitation length of stay (LOS) and related experiences and outcomes of people with spinal cord injury (SCI).
The DRRP must include at least one U.S. based collaborator, and at least one international collaborator that contributes significantly to the project’s research activities. The DRRP must explore the rehabilitation experiences and outcomes of people with SCI in the U.S. and in other countries. This DRRP must contribute to the outcome of new research-based knowledge about rehabilitation LOS and intensity, which can be used to improve rehabilitation outcomes among people with SCI in the United States and in other countries. The DRRP must contribute to this outcome by:
- Conducting a systematic review of the existing international research literature regarding acute care and medical rehabilitation LOS and intensity following SCI.
- Conducting comparative international research to generate new knowledge about current international variation in acute care and medical rehabilitation LOS and intensity following SCI. This research may include an analysis of country-specific policies, practices, and socio-cultural contexts that contribute to international variation in rehabilitation LOS and intensity following SCI.
- Conducting comparative international research to generate new knowledge about the experiences and outcomes of people with SCI, and how those experiences and outcomes are related to the rehabilitation LOS and intensity they experienced. This research must compare the experiences of people with SCI who experience relatively short LOS, and those who experience relatively longer LOS in their initial medical rehabilitation hospitalization. This research may include, but is not limited to conducting surveys, in-depth interviews, and medical record and administrative data reviews among people who have recently experienced SCI and subsequent medical rehabilitation.
- Involving people with SCI and members of other key stakeholder groups in conducting the DRRP’s research and related activities, in order to maximize the relevance and usability of the new knowledge generated by the DRRP. Each collaborating partner in the DRRP must involve people with SCI in conducting the DRRP’s research and related activities. Other key stakeholder groups may include but are not limited to SCI clinicians, rehabilitation program administrators, policymakers, and representatives of local, national or international organizations of people with SCI.
- Focusing its research on one or more specific stages of research. If the DRRP is to conduct research that can be categorized under more than one of the research stages, or research that progresses from one stage to another, those stages must be clearly specified. These stages and their definitions are provided in this section of this notice.
- Conducting knowledge translation activities (i.e., utilization, dissemination) to facilitate stakeholder use of the knowledge and products that result from the DRRP’s research activities.
