The grant funding is intended to be spent on any area needed to maintain, improve, or increase childcare slots in a program. This could include but is not limited to operating costs and utilities, facility improvements or repairs, program supplies or equipment, staff stipends or bonuses, hiring additional staff, or providing vouchers or subsidies to eligible children.

Grants totaling $4,000,000 will be distributed throughout the county via geographic region and size, based on the number of children (ages 0 to 5 years) enrolled in the program, and according to the below categories:
- $10,000 for facilities with up to 10 children
- $25,000 for facilities with 11 to 30 children
- $40,000 for facilities with 31 to 60 children
- $55,000 for facilities with over 60 children
Application Priorities
Priority will be given to applicants who:
- Serve low-income or socio-economically disadvantaged families* (*Socio-economically disadvantaged (SED) is defined as 80% of the Area Median Income (i.e., $149,100 annual income for a family of four))
- Serve children with special needs
- Serve children who are learning English as a second language
- Serve children enrolled in foster care
- Offer subsidies, vouchers, or sliding-scale tuition
- Participate in other County programs such as The Big Lift and Quality Counts
- Have not received a grant from the Child Care Coordinating Council of San Mateo County (4Cs) in 2022
Eligibility Criteria
Eligible grant applicants must:
- Be located in San Mateo County
- Operate a licensed childcare center, licensed family childcare home, or be license-exempt (e.g., public recreation center*, school district-operated program, etc.)
- Serve non-school age children from 0 to 5 years old
- Provide a W-9 form
- Provide self-attestation on negative fiscal impact from COVID-19
- Have not received the 2022 Childcare Grant already since September 2022
