MN PREP’s goal is to decrease risk factors and increase protective factors associated with teen pregnancy and STI’s for Minnesota’s most vulnerable adolescent populations, which will ultimately affect the state’s pregnancy, birth and STI rates.
The purpose of the MN PREP program is to enable states to replicate evidence-based, effective program models. Minnesota will target these populations geographically, with a special emphasis on sub-awardees serving youth in the top 25 counties with the highest rates in teen pregnancies.
Eligible applicants must serve at least one of the following populations in order to be eligible for funding:
MN PREP targets populations experiencing the greatest disparities in teen births, pregnancies and STIs by implementing high quality medically accurate and evidence-based and informed programs. These populations in MN include:
- young people of color and American Indian youth,
- youth in foster care or aging out of foster care,
- youth in juvenile detention or on probation,
- runaway and homeless youth,
- lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ+),
- youth in alternative learning centers,
- youth vulnerable for pregnancies,
- pregnant youth who are under 21 years of age, and
- mothers who are under 21 years of age
- youth residing in areas with high birth rates, and
- youth experiencing racial and ethnic disparities and inequities.
Healthy Youth Development program activities and curriculum implementation are required with youth 10-19 years of age, and sexual health curricula program activities and curriculum implementation are designated for the 15–19-year-old age group. Minnesota will also target program activities and curriculum implementation to individuals at risk of pregnancies, pregnant youth and/or mothers who are under 21 years of age.
Funding Information
Up to $90,500 will be awarded to approximately five to six applicant organizations with award amounts ranging between approximately $80,000 and $90,500 each year of the grant cycle. Two years federal funding with the possibility of a three-year extension contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued federal funding.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligible entities for funding are non-profit community-based youth-serving organizations, clinics serving families and teens, juvenile detention centers or other related organizations, local public health agencies, social service agencies, tribal governments, schools, and alternative learning centers.
