Historic Site Management Grants are intended to foster sound planning and stewardship for New Jersey’s historic properties. Grants are available to aid historic property owners and managers to gain better understanding of preservation needs for a site or structure; to enhance long-term planning for the operations and programs of historic sites; and to broaden public awareness and enjoyment of historic sites.

Funding Information

Historic Site Management Grant requests may range from $5,000 to $75,000. Grant applicants are eligible for a 3:1 funding match in which the Trust may provide up to 75% of total project costs, not to exceed $75,000. The applicant must demonstrate the ability to match 25% of the total project cost for which the grant is requested.

  • Preservation Plan
  • Update to an HSR or Preservation Plan
  • Conditions Assessment
  • Architectural Plans, Designs, Specifications, or other Construction Documents
  • Cost Estimates
  • Archaeological Investigation/Report
  • Adaptive Reuse/Feasibility Study
  • Historic Research Report
  • Materials Analysis (paint, mortar, masonry, etc.)
  • Building Systems Analysis (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, security, energy efficiency, etc.)
  • Engineering Study
  • Landscape Report
  • Disaster Management Plan
  • Maintenance Plan
  • ADA Accessibility/NJ Barrier Free Sub code Compliance Planning, including:
    • Evaluations of barrier-free access requirements for a historic property
    • Evaluation of site and multi-site access for historic properties
    • Preparation of architectural plans, designs, specifications, cost estimates, and other contract documents for complying with New Jersey’s barrier-free requirements
    • Planning and development of interpretive materials or devices to help the disabled visitor
  • Professional planning for the management of historic properties through the preparation of:
    • Multi-year strategic plan
    • Fundraising plan for capital campaigns for the preservation, restoration or rehabilitation of a historic property
    • Endowment plan and proposal

Eligibility Criteria

The following organizations or groups are eligible to apply for grants through this program:

  • Agencies or entities of county government
  • Agencies or entities of municipal government
  • Agencies or entities of state government
  • Nonprofit organizations organized under the New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation Act that qualify for tax-exempt status under Section 501(c) of the Internal Revenue code (26 U.S.C. 501 (c)). Nonprofit applicants must include documentation of their Federal tax-exempt status and registration with the State.
  • Nonprofit organizations are not eligible to apply for projects that benefit churches and houses of worship.

Eligible Properties

  • Individually listed in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and/or the National Register of Historic Places;
  • Situated within the boundaries of a historic district listed in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and/or the National Register of Historic Places, and identified in the National Register of Historic Places Registration Form inventory as a resource contributing to the significance of that district; or
  • Certified by the State Historic Preservation Office as a property that is eligible to be listed in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places, or that meets the criteria to be listed in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places.
