Nonprofit providers remain a critical component of the community’s ability to support residents in need. This grant opportunity is intended to help nonprofit safety net providers remain sustainable by mitigating some of the financial burdens imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
City Council allocated $200,000 of its federal American Rescue Plan Act funding for this sustainability grant opportunity. Funds must be used to “sustain or evolve” the grant awardee’s business. Grants may not be used to fund “direct client assistance” or expenses previously covered under another federal, state, local COVID-19 programs, or by existing contracts.

Eligible nonprofits are encouraged to apply for grants between $10,000 and $50,000.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, a safety net nonprofit organization must meet the following requirements:
- Currently provides services within one of the three eligibility categories to Fairfax City residents
- Exempt from Federal income taxation and that is described in section 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(19) of the Internal Revenue Code (87 Fed.Reg.4447 (Jan. 27, 2022)
- Focus primarily on serving people within Fairfax City who are more vulnerable to self-sufficiency problems, including people with limited income; immigrants and refugees; people with disabilities; and people who are historically subject to disparate access to opportunities
