The Community Foundation of the Ozarks distributes grants through several programs each year with volunteer committee members making grant decisions for each focus area. The Community Foundation of the Ozarks supports engagement in long term, high impact philanthropy by making available the opportunity for agencies to apply for larger scale, multi-year grants. The Advancing Mental Wellness Grant Program will establish longer-term funding in order to have significant impact upon challenges related to mental illness in the Springfield-Greene County region.
The Community Foundation of the Ozarks seeks to fund programs which provide lasting impact in improving access to and a reduction in stigma of seeking mental health care for individuals suffering from mental illness in the Springfield, Missouri metropolitan statistical area (MSA).
Priority concepts:
This grant program creation is in response to the Ozarks Health Commission/Springfield Greene County Health Community Health Needs Assessment. This assessment, released in spring 2022, outlined a number of key assessed health issues. Mental illness, the prevalence of depression, and the much higher than average suicide rate in the Ozarks area are all components of this identified community health need. Every 5.5 days, someone in Springfield dies by suicide. The suicide mortality rate in Springfield and in the Ozarks Health Commission region is far higher than the state or national average (Springfield’s suicide rate is 60% higher than the national average, for example). Additionally, the prevalence of depression and the rate of poor mental health outcomes is higher than the national average.
