Focus Area
A Focus on Early Childhood
- Every member of their community is born with the potential to become a vital part of their lives in the Greenwood area. Research has proven that the experiences they have while in the womb and during the earliest years of their lives play a huge role in how they grow. When newborns, infants, toddlers, and preschoolers receive the kind of love and nurturing that stimulates brain development, they are more likely to do better throughout school, graduate from college, earn more money, and get along better with others. Investments in a child’s earliest years pay off for everyone. That’s why they’ve made early childhood a key focus of their grantmaking.
- They support early childhood in a wide variety of ways, such as:
- Promoting maternal health during pregnancy
- Ensuring proper nutrition
- Helping parents learn how to stimulate brain development in their young children
- Funding Montessori classrooms in area public schools
- Training teachers in the art of Montessori education.
What TSFF funds
- The Self Family Foundation funds broadly in the areas of education, community development, and access to arts and culture. They believe that those within their community are best equipped to determine what programs will work best, so they keep an open mind and welcome new ideas. Within their three broad categories, they’re particularly interested in programs that support early childhood development from birth through third grade. This funding could include, but isn’t limited to, programs that support healthy birth, parenting skills, child health, social-emotional development, cognitive development, preschool readiness, preschool programs, kindergarten readiness, early elementary education, and third-grade reading proficiency.
- Foundation may also funds programs that promote health and wellness in their community, and those that provide arts, culture and historic education/preservation within Greenwood.
