AmeriCorps and Serve Colorado seek to fund effective approaches that expand volunteering, strengthen the capacity of volunteer connector organizations to recruit and retain skill-based volunteers, and develop strategies to use volunteers effectively to solve problems.
Organizations are highly encouraged to submit their own application directly to AmeriCorps based on their Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), Application Instructions, and the following priority areas unique to AmeriCorps, the agency
- Programs that expand, launch or improve high-impact tutoring, mentoring and other school-based or out of school time programs — including the placement and training of student success coaches, integrated student support coordinators, and post-secondary transition coaches — which will help students succeed academically and support their mental health and overall wellbeing, in line with the National Partnership for Student Success.
- Programs that actively engage in removing structural racial inequities, advancing racial equality, and increasing opportunity in order to achieve sustainable change in communities.
- VGF encourages grant applications to include work plans that advance justice and equality in areas such as education, access to food and healthcare, workforce development, elder justice, and living independently.
- Efforts to help local communities respond to and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Applicants may propose programming in any AmeriCorps focus area to aid communities as they recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Programs that are likely to generate significant, measurable improvements in the number of volunteers generated and retained from specific demographic groups such as youth service, generational/family volunteering, skill-based volunteering, or senior volunteering.
Serve Colorado will submit its own VGF application and subgrant awards given a sufficient amount of submissions in response to following priorities:
- Activities that specifically recruit volunteers to:
- Tap into the skills and experience of individuals by recruiting skill-based volunteers to:
- Build the next generation workforce in high-demand sectors, such as agriculture healthcare, education, the trades, wildland firefighters, or land managers;
- Build the capacity of nonprofits;
- Conserve and protect public lands; or
- Meet locally identified needs;
- Promote and implement service learning opportunities for youth
- Serve as benefit navigators in high-need areas, including, but not limited to:
- Digital literacy
- Tax preparation
- Veterans benefits
- Human needs benefits.

Eligibility Criteria
The following non-federal entities (all of which are defined in 2 CFR 200.1) are eligible to apply:
- Federally Recognized Tribes
- Institutions of higher education
- Local governments
- Nonprofit organizations
- States.
