Each year Franklin County sends approximately one million tons of material to the landfill of which nearly 70% could be recycled, composted or diverted. Recycling and waste reduction support their local economy, conserve natural resources and contribute to a healthier environment.
The core goal of SWACO’s competitive Community Waste Reduction (CWR) Grant program is to maintain and help Franklin County reach a rate of recycling greather than 50% by funding innovative projects which address unique community waste reduction needs and have the ability to be sustainably modeled throughout central Ohio.
CWR Grants support efforts led by government entities, schools and non-profits focused on diverting materials from the landfill through:
- Waste Reduction & Reuse
- Organic Waste & Food Waste Diversion
- Recycling
- Outreach, Education & Awareness

Funding Information
- The minimum grant amount is $500 and the maximum is $35,000. Applicants must demonstrate a 25% cash contribution towards the project.

- Educational Supplies & Materials
- Personal Service Contracts.
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible applicants for the CWR Grant program include local governmental and non-profit organizations, including but not limited to, townships, cities, villages, parks, public schools and universities located within SWACO’s District.
- Criteria for evaluating applications includes project planning, measurable outcomes, financial viability, need, and project sustainability.
- Grants are competitively awarded.
