Samfund grants have historically provided financial support to young adults trying to recover from the financial impacts of their cancer treatment. Young adults are an overlooked and underserved population that face a unique set of challenges as a result of their stage in life, with few other resources available to them. Many are too old to have parental support, and many are supporting young families of their own. They may lack seniority at their job, and whatever savings they have managed to accrue disappear quickly during treatment. The Samfund was created back in 2003 to help young adult survivors move forward with their personal, professional, and educational goals. Since joining forces with Expect Miracles Foundation in July 2019, the goals of our Samfund program remain the same.
Now, Samfund programs are a central part of Expect Miracles Foundation’s mission. As one organization, they are proud to help more young adults overcome the financial toxicity caused by a cancer diagnosis and provide a variety of support:
- Financial assistance
- Young adults are arguably the most underserved and vulnerable segment of the cancer community. With so few resources dedicated just to this age group, young adults face profound financial challenges after treatment. Samfund grants provide a life-line for young adults who are struggling with medical and living expenses.
- `Grants average $1,500 and provide help with:
- Rent and mortgage
- Car payments
- Medical bills
- Family building (adoption, fertility storage, IVF, & surrogacy)
- Advocacy and Education
- While Samfund grants provide immediate financial relief, we know it is equally important to raise awareness of these issues and empower young adults and their families. By educating the young adult survivor community, collaborating with other patient advocates and organizations, and participating in state and federal legislative advocacy efforts, they aim to address the root cause of these challenges and develop solutions to prevent them from happening in the first place.
- Online support
- Dedicated staff members offer direct email and phone support and provide critical resources to any survivor in need. Through our Facebook community, we offer a platform for young adult cancer survivors across the country to connect.
