Since founding in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta has promoted academic excellence and the importance of education. Likewise, Tempe Alumnae started its scholarship program when they were chartered in 1973 with “bookships” that helped local high school students cover the costs of books and supplies. Thanks to the generous support of donors and the success of there fundraisers, the program has grown to provide more than $150,000 to support Arizona students as they pursue their educational goals.
The Tempe Alumnae Chapter Scholarship was established to acknowledge and honor individuals who have demonstrated academic excellence, participated in community service, and are pursuing a college education. Each year the Tempe Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated (Tempe Alumnae) awards several scholarships to deserving high school and college students.
Awards
The Tempe Alumnae Chapter offer two scholarship categories in honor of two of there chapter charter members:
- The Sandra L. Caldwell Excellence in Scholarship Award is for Arizona high school seniors of African descent and/or African-American/Black Heritage that exemplify exceptional commitment to education, community service and personal character. There is a $3000 and $1500 award in this category.
- The Arnette Scott Ward Excellence in Scholarship Award is for current Arizona undergraduate students of African descent and/or African-American/Black Heritage at a 2-year or 4-year college/university that exemplify exceptional commitment to education, community service and personal character. There is a $3000 and $1500 award in this category.
