The Ravenswood Community Council, in partnership with the Greater Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce and Special Service Area 31, is seeking proposals from artists to beautify two decommissioned utility poles along Ravenswood Avenue.

The goal is to transform these structures and add more public art to the Ravenswood Sculpture Garden.
Project Expectations & Guidelines
- Proposals should seek to inspire a sense of wonder and liven up their neighborhood’s public space.
- Proposals should reflect Ravenswood’s family-oriented community, avoiding depictions of violence and erotica.
- Any elements added to the utility poles may not protrude more than 2 inches. Any protruding elements should not pose a safety hazard to nearby persons or vehicles.
- Proposals may not include the addition of any large structures anchored into the utility
- No part of the proposed work may hang over the street, sidewalk, or any other portion of the Public Way.
- Proposals should work with neighborhood/property owner feedback (if necessary).
- Priority will be given to Chicago-based artists.
Project Budget
- The total budget for this project is $5,000. This includes all artist fees, supplies, permits (if necessary), and travel expenses.
- 60% of the Project Budget ($3,000) will be awarded to the Artist upon selection. The remainder ($2,000) will be issued upon completion of the Project.
- There is no maintenance budget for the Project. Requests for maintenance funding may be made to SSA #31, but the SSA is under no obligation to fulfill them.
Eligibility Criteria
This opportunity is open to Artists with experience in mural or sculpture design/installation and public art. While not required, preference will be given to Artists residing and working in Chicago. Through examples of past work, Artists must demonstrate the ability to develop and implement a work of public art in durable and/or permanent materials suitable for outdoor environments, and which requires minimal to no maintenance.
Selection Criteria
- Completeness – Does the Proposal meet the Project Expectations?
- Quality – Does the Proposal cover the site area sufficiently and creatively?
- Originality – Does the Proposal bring something new to the community while
- complimenting its surroundings?
- Durability – Will the proposed artwork resist deterioration and defacement?
- Feasibility – Can the Proposal be completed on time and within the constraints of the
- Project Budget?
