Donor Name: Women’s Studio Workshop
State: New York
Type of Grant: Grant
Deadline: 01/15/2023
Size of the Grant: $500
Grant Duration: 6 months
Details:
The mural space at Women’s Studio Workshop faces the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail (WVRT), which is an active outdoor public trail used primarily for walking, running and cycling. They estimate that approximately 3,000-5,000 WVRT users pass by their facilities on a monthly basis, many coming onto their campus to view the current mural, or inquire about the organization. The mural space is 10′ x 23.5′ and overlooks their new, ADA accessible patio and community gathering area. In 2021 and beyond, they hope to build new programs that will bring people together here and connect them with the art and artists at WSW.
Rosendale was founded in 1844 to support the cement mining industry and WSW’s main studio building was the Binnewater Cement Company general store. At the time, the railroad ran through this area constantly and now, many years later, it has been transformed into a multi-use trail for nature lovers. Points of interest along the Rail Trail include caves and kilns left over from the miners and a recently rebuilt railroad trestle, now the centerpiece of the 23-mile trail. The trestle is about a mile from WSW, crossing the Rondout Creek and giving a beautiful view of Rosendale’s mile-long Main Street.
The grant includes a stipend of $350/week, $500 for materials, $250 for travel, and free on-campus housing. Applicants should keep in mind all COVID-19 related travel stipulations. WSW artistic staff will be available for technical and material support throughout the residency.
Past Public Art Residencies have taken place along the Rail Trail, in the heart of Rosendale, and at the CHRCH Project Space in nearby Cottekill, NY.
