These grants will provide support for restaurants, food manufacturers, shared commercial kitchens, and commercial corridors like Main Streets and Business Improvement Districts to minimize their food waste going to landfill and minimize urban rat populations. This will help businesses meet the goals of Sustainable DC and the future requirements of the Zero Waste Omnibus Act while reducing costs in both food purchasing and waste disposal expenses. Eligible applicants are food businesses that are appropriately licensed and with fewer than 25 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees. Nonprofits are also eligible when providing direct support for multiple eligible businesses.
Funding Information
DSLBD intends to award between 10 and 25 grants from the $300,000 available for direct grants.
Project Period
The “Period of Performance” is February 1, 2023 through August 31, 2023.
Eligibility Requirements
The following types of organizations are eligible to apply for this grant:
- For-profit, District-based food system businesses with a valid District business license.
- Businesses must be producing, processing, or serving food or beverages. Businesses must attest to being independently and/or locally owned and must attest to having 25 full time equivalent 2022 Food Waste Innovation Grant Request for Applications 5 (FTE) employees or fewer.
- Nonprofits that will be directly managing shared infrastructure or programming for two or more businesses that meet criteria in 4.1. Nonprofits will need to submit letters of support signed by each partner business including the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Employer Identification Number (EIN) and Basic Business License (BBL) for each business partner, as well as attestations by the business regarding their eligibility
